Traveling With Your Dog
Planning on traveling out of the country with your dog? The CDC has recently implemented new changes that are critical if you are planning to head out with your best friend.
New International Travel Changes for 2024
Effective August 1, 2024
In a continuing effort to prevent the spread of Dog-Mediated Rabies Virus Variant (DMRVV) the CDC has recently revised its import regulations. Although the requirements have been eased the exact requirements does depend on your dog’s situation.
If you have traveled with your dog in the past 6 months from a dog rabies free or low-risk country you will need to complete the CDC Dog Import and be prepared to show it to the customs official upon entry. The form can be completed by the pet owner and does NOT need to be certified by an outside agency. There is no fee required. In addition:
- Dogs must appear healthy upon arrival
- Dogs must be at least 6 months old at time of entry or return to the US
- Dogs must have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner to identify them.

For those Dogs that have traveled to ANY dog rabies high-risk countries in the last 6 month you will need to meet both US-Vaccinated Requirements and Foreign-Vaccinated requirements.
- Complete the CDC Dog Import form online. You will need to a printed copy to complete the process.
- A Certification of Foreign Rabies Vaccination and Microchip form will need to be prepared and processed by our USDA accredited veterinarian then endorsed by an official government veterinarian. If your dog was not vaccinated by a doctor within our practice your pet will need to be revaccinated by us or we will not be able to provide the required document. .
- If not included on the form above, you will also need a valid rabies serology titer report from a CDC-approved laboratory. This must be performed at least 30 days after the last rabies vaccination and you pet must already have a microchip implanted.
- Dogs must have a reservation at a CDC-registered animal care facility. If you do not have a valid rabies serology titer, this must include a 28-day quarantine reservation.
- Dogs must have a microchip that can be detected with a universal scanner to identify them. The microchip must be implanted before getting the rabies vaccine, or else the vaccine will be invalid. The microchip number must be included on all required forms and supporting documents.
- Dogs must appear healthy upon arrival.
- Dogs must be at least 6 months old at time of entry.
