Animal Medical of New City, veterinarian in New City, NY, is pleased to offer telemedicine and tele-advice services to our clients and other pet owners. Let’s get started!

What Is Telemedicine for Pets?

Telemedicine is a way for our veterinarians to talk to you and visualize your pet without having you make a trip to our office. It doesn’t replace the need for a physical exam, but in many cases, it can help you with your immediate veterinary care needs or help us to continue your pet’s treatment at home.

What is Tele-advice for Pets?

Tele-advice is a free service to pet owners residing within a 10-mile radius of our practice.  If you have a question about your pet’s health, one of our veterinary professionals can offer you a free, 10-minute consultation where we provide general answers to your questions about your pet’s health. NY State law does not permit us to diagnose or treat patients that we have not physically examined within a year.

Is There A Fee For Telemedicine Consultations?

Sometimes. If you would like us to diagnose and treat your pet over the phone, there is an examination fee. If your pet requires medications, you’ll be able to pick those up at our office or order them for delivery through our online store.  Prices vary depending on the medication your pet needs and the quantity.

There is no fee if you would like some general advice about whatever medical condition your pet may be experiencing.  Call times to speak with one of our veterinary professionals for free tele-advice is limited to 10 minutes.

How Do I Pay For My Pet’s Telemedicine Consult?

You can pay using any major credit card.

Can My Pet’s Medical Condition Be Diagnosed Using Telemedicine?

Yes, but we need to qualify that answer.  There are a few things we consider during each telemedicine consult.

  • Have we physically examined your pet within a year?  State law requires us to have physically examined your pet within a year before we are able to diagnose any condition or prescribe any medications. During the COVID pandemic, this rule has been somewhat relaxed, so there can be exceptions. Once we find out more about your pet’s condition, we’ll be able to provide you with more specific information.
  • Is this an emergency?  In cases where the patient is in need of urgent care, we can provide a telemedicine consult for you regardless if we have ever seen your pet, but emergency telemedicine cases almost always require a trip to our practice or an urgent care facility for additional treatment immediately following the consultation.
  • What kind of symptoms does your pet have?  Sometimes we do not know if telemedicine consultations will be sufficient for your pet until we find out more about your pet’s medical condition and see your pet using the video capabilities of the telemedicine technology.  If we find out that a telemedicine consult is insufficient, we will arrange a time for you to visit our practice while we are on the phone with you.  There may be an additional fee if we are required to see your pet in our office, but we’ll work this out together on a case-by-case basis.
